With many many miles, deserts, hills and mountains covered, today sees the GM Fundraising Border2Border team making the final part of the journey to the Mexican border.
It is fair to say the challenge, dubbed as ‘The Toughest Yet’ has most definitely lived up to its name! With early starts to avoid +45 degree temperatures; snow drifts around Crater Lake; hailstorms in “Sunny California” and cycling 5,200 feet up the side of a mountain in pouring rain and 11c, the varying weather conditions have certainly added to the enormity of this already epic challenge. To date the riders have cycled 1,904 miles, climbed 84,594ft and still have another full day to go.
But it’s not just about them – the support team have been amazing. They have coped with every situation and put in many extra hours before and after the riders day to make sure everything is organised ahead of the next day. They don’t just drive the teams around but provide a rolling food and rehydration café, first aid, much needed therapy (physical and mental) when things get really tough, find bike repair shops for the endless punctures and generally keep everyone safe and well. All round it really has been Ride, Eat, Sleep, Repeat.
It hasn’t been all bad though! The scenery has been spectacular, the laughs have been many and the team spirit has been soaring throughout. The team captains have got each and every member through their day’s task; even when they think they can’t go on the team have pulled together to get each other through to the end. The personal sense of achievement for everyone taking part will never be forgotten and is so very well deserved.
I’m sure you have all been following the regular Facebook posts and photos, from which it is pretty clear that everyone involved has truly been pulling in one direction: to raise money for the children and families of Hope House. There has been a phenomenal amount of support shown, which means so much to all involved. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Good luck to the team today on the last leg of the tour and please keep supporting them to the very end https://www.justgiving.com/teams/GMFB2B.
